SKYPE TIPS AND ADVICE

  • Use a Headset! (Headphones with a microphone). At least attempt to use headphones as they reduce the 'feedback' to your microphone and make it a LOT easier for listeners to hear you comments. Headsets are VERY cheap these days and improve the quallity of your conference calls immensely.
    • Laptops: Use a Headset first, if your not able to, use headphones and the microphone built into your laptop
    • PC's: Use a Headset first, if not use headphones with a table microphone, or the micrphone in your Webcam.
  • Double clicking on a contact's name, in the Contacts list, will allow you to chat directly to that person, but it will also show their local time.
  • When you are invited to a Skype Conference, a separate Conference window will load up enabling you to:
    • See the names of everyone attending the conference
    • Talk to everyone in the conference group
    • Type and send messages to the conference group
    • Video will NOT be used for standard discussion sessions as video can be problematic in conferencing and a may reduce your bandwidth, lowering the quality of your sound and microphone output.
  • When the host leaves the conferenece, the conference session will end immediately.

FURTHER SKYPE SESSION INFORMATION AND ETIQUETTE

This format is intended to provide a dynamic, informal, ‘round table’ discussion on topics that are directly relevant to our genre. Most importantly, it should be easy to access, enjoyable and productive, as we are all busy and hardly need further ‘meetings’ in our lives. I can best summarize these sessions by describing them as: ‘Serious Fun‘

WHY SKYPE?:

I recommend using Skype as it is quite stable and in widespread use. It offers a consistently high voice quality and is easy to setup a microphone and speakers. We won't be using 'Video' as it creates more problems than it solves, plus myself and Richard have faces best shown on radio :-) ...sorry Richard.

Please use a headset, if not, be aware that your speakers can 'feed back' sound into your microphone and cause a rather annoying distortion.

Should you be unfamiliar with the Skype interface, there is a slight learning curve, but it’s quite intuitive and very similar to Yahoo and MSN Messenger.

LATEST SKYPE VERSION: 18.08.2009 Version: 4.1.0.141

Please try and keep your version of Skype up to date as it can cause problems when transferring files or sharing documents etc.

PRIVACY:

Please distribute your Skype name wisely. Read the privacy settings section of Skype and use settings that you are comfortable with.

HOSTING:

Anyone is free to host a Skype session as they see fit. It would be preferable if they could use this portal, as it's been formatted, to arrange future Skype sessions. To make the Skype sessions successful the host will record, or nominate someone else to record, key points of the conversations. Since Skype allows for 'conferencing' everyone is free to talk AND write comments at any point. The host will 'try' to keep the conversation on-subject, invite and introduce attendees as they come and go, and suggest people 'record' their key points by typing them into the Skype chat area. The 'typed' conversation can then be copy-pasted into the Wiki, dated and subject headed accordingly.

SCHEDULES:

Depending on the response, it may be worthwhile setting up a regular Skype session. Perhaps once a week or fortnight? For the interim, it would be wise to see how the sessions develop. For the moment, adhoc sessions can be arranged as members see fit.

TIMEZONES:

It will be quite untenable to have a timeslot that will suit everyone. Initially we'll trial the session and 'iterate' the format as we progress. I think it’s entirely possible to have two sessions (on the same topic) at each end of the GMT scale that will allow for am and pm time slots.

SKYPE ETIQUETTE:

Our diverse backgrounds should promote a wonderful spectrum of opinions and expertise, I encourage people to express their opinions with conviction, and of course, we don’t have to agree, but please show respect for your colleagues and their opinions!

We have a vast variety of nationalities and dialects, so please be understanding of those who use English as a second, if not third language or even those of us still struggling with it as our native tongue :P
