EERS Test Table

EXERGAMING EXPERIENCE RATING SYSTEM (EERS) - version 2

First: Have you made an account at this wiki? Please do so if you haven't - sorry to demand this of you, but you need to 'edit' this page to input results and you need an account to edit.

Once you have an account, then select 'edit' in the top left of this page and you'll have direct access to the table below :)

Second: This table allows you to input results into each catagory (column) to test the Exergame Experience Rating System (EERS). Write the name of the game/exergame in the first column. Then please input your first name - We will know who you are as we are familiar with the most likely contributors. This will be extremely helpful as we may graciously ask for your help in identifying large shifts in your results should they occur.

Please add any comments and constructive criticism into the table, if you have time and feel you need further explanation!

There are no wrong answers here! The answers are determined by your experience and yours alone. Also keep in mind that we are evaluating 'off the shelf' versions of exergames and not adapted or modified implementations.

Try and limit your input to the mainstream, well recognised games (i.e. try Wii Fit/Plus, Wii Sports, DDR, Eyetoy kinetic, EA Sports Active, Shape Up, Rock Band etc). You can input the ratings for as many exergames as you wish (considering the above of course).

Follow Brett's first example in the table to see how to add your content

Lastly, Rating:

  1. All catagories are scored out of 7, with 7 being the maximum or 'best' result (Maximum being the best incarnation of that catagories prospects)
  2. The M21 score is the sum of the three Mandatory (M) catagories (shown in orange).
  3. The M21 & Total Score can be added up by yourself or left for the admins to addup (be kind :) - Max score possible is: 70

Comments:(If you rating some catagories very high or very low, could you please briefly explain your reasoning):

I belive this exergame is a fantastic introduction to 'real world' sports. The gameplay and game mechanics offer a very tactile feel with excellent audio and effects. The animation and characterisation of the avatars de-stigmatises sport and competitiveness and makes the sim-sport style of the game very approachable by anyone at any age or ability level. (Boxing is terribly buggy but still compelling in multiplayer and with a bit of guided instruction on 'technique', it can still be a lot of fun and a great workout). The training modes offer 3 extra minigames per activity increasing the sustainability of gameplay and exercise benefit.

Eyetoty Kinetic Brett 4 5 6 4 5 4 3 3 5 5 15 44/70

Comments:(If you rate some catagories very high or very low, could you please briefly explain your reasoning):

Needs good lighting and an area cleared of all furniture. Slow load times and an annoying menu navigation system. Allows routine building to create your own workout combinations. The feedback and save feature allows very useful data on player progress.

Wii Fit Brett 3 5 4 4 4 5 4 4 3 5 12 40/70

Comments:(If you rate some catagories very high or very low, could you please briefly explain your reasoning): This is a game that relies on exercise motivation through accumulated player data rather than gameplay motivations. By giving the player feedback on body composition and by incorporating positive feedback messages the player is encouraged to continue until the reach their fitness goal. By selecting higher energy demandind activities (jogging, deep knee bending snowboarding, 'enthusiastic' hula hooping, advanced stepping to a platform, some Yoga and strength moves), the player is able to gain a measurable fitness increase. Sustainability is poor once the player has reached their fitness goal, the game then becomes useable as an occassional weight management tool. The Wii balance board has become a significant player in rehabilitation adaptions and has proven successful in being an associated treatment in many conditions: stroke treatment, falls prevention etc.

Hi,
well you should at least difference between the systems ;-)
There is a huge difference!

Engagement, fun and safety in my view, will be affected by the hardware in use such as: Quality and size of the video screen (bigger the better), I use a projection system for DDR and most games for that matter. The style of dance mat/pad, either softpad and hardpad will affect the safety factor and timing (slipping soft mats). I've, more than once tripped over my softpads (which gives a pretty good indication of how 'balance challenged' I am), I would assume that a hardpad is more secure?!

Hi Brett,
that highly depends on the player.

"Impact Pad" (only USB)
1-6 feet, recommended for absolute beginner and beginner
single: save (make sure it is flat on the floor)
double: the player has to be careful when he moves to the other pad

Standard Softpads
1-3 feet, only when you have no other solution
safety: slipping, wrinkle very fast
tip: use packet tape to fix it on the floor (first edges, then sides)

Hard pads:
depends on the height and how good you can feel the buttons
* as higher the pads are - more danger to fall, when you move to far
(double is very dangerous, because the risk to go to far is higher)
* when you can "feel" the buttons very good, it will be more save

Stepping:
On softpads stepping is better for your health
On hardpads you need good shoes and a "soft" stepping movements. Some kids do stomp and that is not good.

Seniors:
Safety bar is highly recomended.

Safetey is quite an issue here, and I'm using Konami DDR but should have been clear it's for a console, retail offering - i.e. the slippery fabric pads - the standard softpads - which are awful for durability as well.

Just to clear this page up a bit, this realtes to the PS2 version of Konami's retail DDR with the standard softpad supplied in the package

Machine Dance has a very high motivation. For myself it has one of the highest. The key is to have the music also on a CD. When I listen to the music, I get high interest to play it :-)
Stepmania has a "jukebox" and that is great. Just start it and after setting up you can start the game :-)

Machine Dance is quite dull. For myself it's not that appealing. This is reflected in my scores for DDR above which quantifies and explains my point of view.

some points for central information:
developer, publisher, website, system, age rating, software, hardware, both, own system, additional needed, ...

Seems like getting a score of 50 would be a good result!
